The Commissioning of USS Chafee [DDG 90]
took
place at Navy Station Newport on October 18, 2003.
The
ship was named in honor of the late
United
States Senator, John H. Chafee,
a former governor of Rhode Island
who
served as Secretary of the Navy from 1969 to 1972.
He
was elected to the United States Senate in 1976
and
served until his passing in 1999.
