Moving the Depot Print
Article
As mentioned in the Esther Fisher Benson articles, the depot building was previously situated on Warner Street, where it was used as a sales office for a stone cutter business.

It purchased by Christie Smith in 1975 and moved to the rear of 18 Elm Street.

The building was later purchased by the ‘The National Railroad Foundation and Museum’ and moved to the south side of Bridge Street for use by the Old Colony & Newport Railway.

When the Visitors Center was built, the building was moved to the North side of Bridge Street to the place where it currently sits.

Those who were involved in the move include:
  • Christie Smith
  • Ed Smith
  • Tom 'Too' Benson
  • Minnie Cushing
  • Gary Martin
  • Oatsie Charles.
Fortunately the photos of the move were taken at the time and saved in an album by Christie Smith. Click on each of the links to the right to see a scanned copy of Christie Smith's photo album.

Thanks for the photos!
