Old Colony Railroad - Sakonnet Bridge
Close Window
The Sakonnet River Railroad Bridge was built in the late 1860's. The present span was placed in 1898. During the early 1980's it was struck by a vessel knocking it out of alignment to the extent that it would not close properly and lock in place. That effectively ended freight service to the island and led to the removal of the downtown yards and erection of the Gateway Center.
