Peripheral Nervous System Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS)
is an acute inflammatory process characterized by varying degrees of motor weakness and pathology.
In GBS the immune system starts to destroy the myelin sheath that surrounds the axons.
Etiology
cell mediated immunologic reaction.
Lab Assessment
No single finding confirms diagnosis. Physician does a lumbar puncture to evaluate CSF. Peripheral blood tests may show leukocytosis early in the illness. ESR is typically WNL.
