Prophylactic hyperventilation during the first 20 hours after injury is usually avoided as it may produce ischemia.
Induction of barbiturate coma: for clients whose ICP cannot be controlled by other means, the client may be given Nembutal to decrease metabolic demands of the brain and cerebral blood flow, thus decreasing edema.
